Returning for its third annual outing, the Recon Festival once more promises a truly wonderful celebration of experimental and electronic music. For four days later on this month numerous exciting music, art and film performances will take place across multiple venues in Leeds and Bradford, including the recently opened Headrow House in the city centre of Leeds.
Andy Abbott, festival co-director and linchpin of local legends That Fucking Tank and NOPE (who will be playing at one of the festival’s lead-in events on 10th October) explains:
“Whilst we’re concentrating on commissioning and developing new work and collaborations year-round we still like a party. We’re lucky in Leeds and Bradford to have so many quality acts willing to play, as well as new and exciting spaces available that add an extra level to the experience. Whether they’re collaborating with innovators or re-purposing tools for things they were never intended, artists push the boundaries of how we relate to technology – often revealing a humanistic and soulful side to the purely functional. I think with the line-up this year we’ll experience a diverse range of approaches from musicians, artists, filmmakers doing just that.”
And the Recon party proper starts on the 15th of October at Gallery II in the University of Bradford with the launch of the ‘Notes from Technotopia’ exhibition, an artistic vision of the technological past, present and future.
On the same date at the famous Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, the British electronic music pairing of Andy Turner and Ed Handley and those celebrated WARP Records artists Plaid top an enthralling bill that also includes local dance boogie duo Galaxians.
Further highlights of the festival include appearances from another WARP recording artist, electronic trailblazer Clark along with grime producer Mumdance (in a joint venture with Beacons Metro), and coming straight off the back of their most recent blistering performance at Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia, Hookworms will present a not-to-be-missed joint collaboration with the renowned Spacemen 3, Wild Beasts and Ghostpoet producer Richard Formby.
In what is a truly DIY festival, not one of the people involved takes any money from it, nor is there any corporate sponsorship of the event.
