C Turtle have just shared their new single ‘2001‘ – the first new music from the London band since their critically acclaimed 2024 album, Expensive Thrills. On March, the band will tour Europe alongside American shoegazers julie; they’ll and perform at summer festivals including End Of The Road (full dates below). On ‘2001‘ noughties pop sensibility upends the C Turtle analogue spin-wash; poked at by the blissfully flippant lyrical exchanges of vocalists Cole Quirke and Mimiko McVeigh. The B-side, a cover of The Magnetic Fields’ When You’re Old And Lonely, juxtaposes the single by striking a powerfully sombre note.
On the new single, vocalist Cole Quirke says,
“2001′ was originally a song I wrote for my first band ‘Honey Creeper’ before Covid. It never really developed much in that group but I thought it would fit the direction that C Turtle is going in. We tried it out and loved it – I can’t really remember what intentions I had with it when I first wrote it but when we play it now it reminds me of being a kid; things like getting my first skateboard, Lord of the Rings coming out, watching Cartoon Network and playing out scenes from ‘Dragon Ball Z’ with my brother – so the playfulness of this song feels nostalgic to me and represents memories of an easier time. Mimiko was born in 2001 so there’s that too“
Jack Saunders at Radio 1 was a big supporter of Expensive Thrills as were BBC 6 Music. Since the release of the album, the band have spent time writing new material and steadily touring. C Turtle began as the solo project of Cole Flynn Quirke before meeting fellow vocalist-guitarist Mimi McVeigh on a shoot. The two messed around with home recordings and it quickly became clear that Mimi should join the band as a vocalist and guitarist. Since Jimmy Jackson took up the sticks in 2024, Quirke has enlisted new recruits in Frank Livesey (bass) and Mack Kniese (keys/synth), who joins full-time after producing the Expensive Thrills LP at Abbey Road.
