NEWS: Adwaith continue year of ground breaking firsts with historic BBC Radio 1 session

Double Welsh Music Prize winners Adwaith have never been shy about forging ahead on their own terms. The past few weeks alone have been confirmation of that. Just over a week ago, on Dydd Miwsig Cymru / Welsh Language Music Day, the trio released third album Solas, the first double album ever recorded in Welsh by a female artist.
In January the band appeared on BBC Woman’s Hour – another first, performing in their native tongue – and on the early evening BBC UK-wide One Show, Hollie Singer, Gwenllian Anthony and Heledd Owen were voted the most influential Welsh band of the last ten years, with song ‘ETO’ named the most influential single of the decade.

But there’s more. Of course there is! At the weekend they played a massive hometown show at the Lyric Theatre, Carmarthen and tonight Adwaith are in session for Radio One at Maida Vale. They are the first female Welsh language band to do so, and this is the first all Welsh session since the early 1990s. The trio translated a song into Welsh, another historic event because Radio 1 have never had a cover done in any other language than English.

You can hear the session on Sian Eleri’s show at 8pm and find out what song Adwaith reinterpreted in Cymraeg.

‘2025 has been a big year for us already! We started off with The Guardian feature and went on Woman’s Hour, a Radio 1 session and being on the One Show! And obviously meeting H from Steps was a highlight…’ says Gwen. ‘This feels like a really exciting time for us as a band and we feel like the sky is our limit. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for us.’

You can read our review of Solas, and watch In Conversation at the listening party at CWRW, Carmarthen.

Solas is out now via Libertino.
