‘O Honey, No’ is the exciting debut solo single from the London-based songwriter Hannah Maryse. It arrives accompanied by a sparkling video, shot by Adrian Hermes (who also plays banjo on the song, as well as mixing and mastering it) in the secluded location of Playa de Cofete on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura. It was then edited by Hannah Maryse Robinson who in addition to her musical talents has an impressive CV that also includes screenwriting, filmmaking, illustration, copywriting, and content marketing.
Speaking about the single and video, Hannah Maryse says: “I wrote this (‘Oh Honey, No’) after spiralling over and eventually accepting a parting of ways. We shot mostly in slow-mo on Cofette – this insanely desolate beach – to create a disoriented woozy feeling. For the chorus, we flipped it – filming fast then slowing down to capture the euphoria of letting go.”
‘Oh Honey, No’ was recorded at Berlin’s Reflex Magnet studios with producer KB Nasca (Chicos de Nasca) and features Rachel Glassberg (Matching Outfits) on drums, Tommy Fuller on bass, and, as noted above, Adrian Hermes (Leopard Papagei) on banjo.
Whilst ‘Oh Honey, No’ is the first solo offering from Hannah Maryse, she has previously spent years in Berlin’s underground psych and anti-folk scenes, playing with acts like Soft Milk and Sour Janes, as well as time on her project Part Bat. But the debut single with its lyrical sense of liberation and expressive musical freedom marks a whole new beginning for her.
