Video Of The Week #291: Clutter – Jesus

Emerging Stockholm quartet Clutter have released the video for ‘Jesus‘, directed by Majken Bergman, it’s lifted from the band’s debut 7″ ‘Jesus’/’Holy Brother’ which was released in November.

Clutter is the project of 20-year-olds Hilda Ander (vocals/guitar/bass), Emma French, Ove Jerndal (guitar/keys) and Ville Scott (drums/keys). ‘Jesus‘ is underpinned by an unrelenting, cacophonous sound that echoes the band’s name, it finds singer, bassist and guitarist Emma French taking lead vocals, fusing existential lyrical ideas, her bittersweet vocals teetering on a seesawing sound with grungy riffs sparring with relentless percussion, it reminds one of the laconic charm of Breeders and the caustic lurch of Sonic Youth, yet it’s still charmingly individual and refreshing.

They say: “The Jesus music video has a classic setup, a band in a white studio, and since it’s our first video we thought that formula would work well as an introduction to the band. Because of our limited budget and low-quality camera, we wanted to lean into the sleazy, early 2000s feeling. Majken Bergman shot the entire thing in a day, following our idea, then edited the footage and sent it to Henry Ander. Henry added the final touches, the animations, which we wanted a sort of comic book feel to. It’s a fun video and we all had fun working on it, hopefully that’s obvious when you’re watching it.”

While the band only made their debut in September they’ve already made a name for themselves for their intense live shows and their blend of grunge and post-hardcore with ’90s alternative rock and current day indie rock.

This Friday the band is set to play the prestigious showcase festival ESNS/Eurosonic in Groningen, Netherlands (playing at WEnutbutter at 21.00) and today the band is also announcing their first London headline show, at The Lexington on April 16 (tickets here).
