In just a few weeks’ time all roads will lead to the Cottiers Theatre in the West End of Glasgow. On the 27th of February, this venue located in the historic 19th-century former Dowanhill Parish Church will host the launch event for The Smile You Send Out Returns To You, the new album from Constant Follower.
Constant Follower is the band formed around Scots’ songwriter Stephen McAll. Having grown up in Scotland’s first “new town,” East Kilbride, McAll now lives in the city of Stirling. His debut album Neither Is, Nor Ever Was was released in 2021 and was followed two years later by Even Days Dissolve, a collaboration with instrumental acoustic guitarist and fellow Scotsman Scott William Urquhart.
Having already received widespread critical acclaim, both records were nominated for the SAY (Scottish Album of the Year) Award. And based upon the evidence thus far there is every indication that The Smile You Send Out Returns To You could quite easily follow suit.
Following the earlier releases of ‘Whole Be’, ‘All Is Well’, and ‘Patient Has Own Supply’, ‘Almost Time To Go’ is the fourth single to be drawn from The Smile You Send Out Returns To You and just like its predecessors it is an emotionally restorative piece of music.
The Smile You Send Out Returns To You has been described as “a song cycle that tackles addiction and recovery, parenthood, and the impact of kindness” and ‘Almost Time To Go’ reinforces the therapeutic power that this music holds. Yet for all the reflective sorrow that may lie at the heart of this song, listening to it becomes an altogether more uplifting and transformative experience.
Featuring Andy Aquarius on harp, ‘Almost Time To Go’ has an elusive almost transcendental quality not entirely dissimilar in texture and feel to elements of David Crosby’s 1971 masterpiece If I Could Only Remember My Name had that record somehow been relocated from the West Coast of America to the central belt of Stephen McAll’s homeland.
Ahead of the single’s release on 16th January, God Is In The TV is delighted to bring you the world premiere of ‘Almost Time To Go’ and its accompanying video (filmed and directed by Kris Boyle).
