NEWS: Kerry Worton shares ‘Mother U’

Black Country singer, songwriter and guitarist Kerry Worton has just shared her powerful, inspiring track ‘Mother U,’ the debut single from her upcoming album, “dedicated to fostering families and their amazing young people.” It focuses on “the need for more fostering families, especially for teenagers and sibling groups.” Kerry said, “The song ‘Mother U’ is a personal song as I’m from a fostering family. It highlights the need to nurture and encourage children placed into care and the vital role foster parents play.” It is “a tender reflection on the emotions of being a foster mother and the passage of time as both child and adult wait for trust to come. Backed by her band members, Kerry shows she is a talented and versatile artist, capable of delivering raw emotional power through her music.”

In ‘Mother U,’ fierce, hook-laden melodies dance over funky buoyant staccato riffs in this stunningly soulful track that spans every edge of the human condition. There’s a depth and myriad of emotions in this song; a full world within its sonic walls. From tenderness to strength,  from lush reflective harmonies to soul-spanning primal vibrato that captures that Lioness roar echoing the fierce warm love and reach from a mother to their foster child.

Warm mellifluous melodies swell, crash and blossom from an intense wall of sound to twinkling yet dark lullaby-like vibes. There’s a whole multifaced narrative here. It’s cool timeless and darkly vibrant.  Warm, fierce and so infectious that the listener is bound to want to listen on a loop. It reflects the longing, love and fierce warmth of a foster mother. The authentic depiction of the raw power and redeeming love of Motherhood is very reminiscent of Sinéad O’Connor.

Kerry describes her music as ‘Black Country acoustic-rock’ echoing “the sounds of bands that wail and hail from her birthplace in the West Midlands” She has worked as a session musician and has recorded backing vocals for various artists. She is now taking centre stage, performing her original songs with the ‘Kerry Worton Trio.’

Kerry enjoyed recording the backing vocals to the recent Spoon Speaker Man album The Age Of No Opinion’ featuring key members of Power of Dreams and Ned’s Atomic Dustbin. She describes how “This catapulted me back into the studio after finally kicking long covid in the bollocks. Whilst attending a rehabilitation hospital and walking without the use of a wheelchair, I eventually swapped my crutches for the guitar again and started to write my own songs to help me to improve my speech (which had also been affected) and my coordination. Music certainly healed me! I have now started a music charity ‘ Wolves Music United’ in my hometown of Wolverhampton to support those affected my mental health or financial hardship to access music!”

The Kerry Worton Trio performed her original track ‘Break Up Song’ live on the online channel ‘The Narrowboat Sessions’ in September 2024, which received 250, 000 plays in six weeks. It was this that encouraged multi-instrumentalist, Kerry, to record her album, joined by Ben Bagle (cajon) and Darren Burrell (bass). Recently she showcased her songs in New York, USA and performed live with her trio on UK Radio. Compared to the likes of Janis Joplin and Sinead O’Connor, her voice can be haunting and inviting then in a split second it grabs you unexpectedly with an emotional rawness, power and beauty. Her acoustic guitar playing draws you in with the energic prowess of punk/rock with hypnotic undertones of the blues. Mother U was Recorded at the Cellar Rooms, Wolverhampton by Joe Bickley and mixed by Jessica Corcoran at Perry Vale Studios, London.

The thought provoking, inspiring video highlights the need for more fostering families, especially for teenagers and sibling groups Kerry said, ” If you would like to know more about fostering then please approach agencies or the local authority in your area.
