Lynskey are a Merseyside based duo, consisting of B Murray (they/them) and Saul Gerrard (he/him), that have made some big strides in 2024, from their first major headline gig back in February, which led to support slots with the likes of Benefits and Meryl Streek, onwards to the release of their third EP, which is entitled ‘here, this is for you’, as a thank you to everyone who has helped make them feel a part of the DIY community.
Recorded at a combination of their homes and at legendary Liverpool rehearsal rooms, Vulcan Studios, this is the first collection of theirs that have been externally mixed and this seems to have given it a sheen and (almost) commercial feel that they have never had before (meant as a positive thing)
The five tracks whizz by in under 15 minutes, and a real mixture of sounds and influences, ranging from nu-metal to downright hardcore, all delivered with a healthy disregard for the traditional verse-chorus-verse.
‘KiCKiT‘ sets the tone, as it usually does live, it’s all sprawling guitars and thrashing drums, but then descends into some, almost indie ‘aaah-aaahs‘, which belies what’s gone before, on a EP that is full of sharp musical sleight of hand turns.
Live favourite ‘You Got The Scatterbrain Perk’, is a different kettle of fish recorded rather than it’s live incarnation, it’s much clearer (it’s a very well produced suite of songs) vocal wise, leading to being able to enjoy the various different sections that make up the end product, it is not alone by feeling like there’s a few ideas crammed into one song, the enthusiasm shines through, with shades of both Mclusky and My Chemical Romance, a difficult feat to pull off.
Speaking of Mclusky-isms, the title ‘something something else in 5/4′ sounds like a lost Future Of The Left track, and it’s probably the most straightforward track of the five, it acts as the perfect trailer for their previous single ‘Keanu’, which is a love song to the great actorman, “I think I’m in love with Keanu Reeves”, and is definitely their most commercial song to date, you could hear Steve Lamacq being all over this on 6 Music.
Final track ‘m-m-m-Metal’ is another that spans the world of metal and indie, there’s almost a dance beat thrown in as well, they’ve thrown everything in for this one, and it’s a barnstorming conclusion to a batch of songs that feels like there’s something for everyone within, an EP that you will go back to time and time again, and find something new.
They are hoping to release a full album followed by a tour in 2025, get it in your diaries now as one to look out for.
