Griff Lynch today releases another Welsh language beauty in the form of ‘Ti Sy’n Troi’ (You Are Turning, pronounced phonetically Tee-Sun-Troy), created with the help of Welsh Music Prize-shortlisted singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lleuwen Steffan. Elegantly harmonising and duetting, the simplicity and sophistication of this song makes it all the more powerful, Lleuwen’s voice rising and falling, ghostly and soft to impassioned, intertwined with Griff’s understated delivery.
The song’s journey has not been a short or straightforward one. Written during the pandemic, it was left both nameless and lyric-less, until Lleuwen came onboard to record earlier this year, as well as Cardiff-based mixer, Rhys Edwards, who produced Gwenno’s Mercury Prize-shortlisted album.
Featuring beatific melodies and pinned by its folk-inspired richful string arrangements of Owain Llwyd, London-based musician and film director, Griff Lynch, says of the single: “I’m a big fan of Lleuwen as a singer and what she represents as an artist. Everything she creates comes from a real’ place, and always strikes a chord with me. I’m so glad that we managed to work together on this one.”
Having performed to a full house at Clwb Ifor Bach as part of Cardiff’s multi-venue showcase festival Sŵn earlier this autumn, Griff Lynch’s next outing with his four-member band will be at Two Palms, Hackney on 7 December.
‘Ti Sy’nTroi’ follows ‘Kombucha’, the first single – which has surely one of the best videos of the year to accompany it with dancing laboratory assistants/scientists in rain bonnets, what more do you want – taken from his forthcoming debut solo album expected early next year via Lwcus.
