NEWS: SACK share ‘Wake Up People’ album

Dublin band Sack have released their long awaited album Wake Up People!  recorded at Dublin’s Sonic Studio with John Murphy and Ber Quinn, it is the first album to feature new members Gavin Fox (Idlewild, Turn) and Tony Barrett (The Brilliant Trees) alongside original members Martin McCann, John and Tony Brereton. Described asFrank Sinatra fronting the Pixies the indie cult legends have written what many consider their best record yet, cementing their place in the upper echelons of Irish indie. DJ Dan Hegarty once described singer McCann as “one of the most gifted and unique vocalists that Ireland has ever heard” and you can hear exactly why on this record with lush sonorous vocals soaring seamlessly through, rich kinetic riffs in this album full of treasures, uplifting inspiring and urging you to dance with its spellbinding sonic palette.

The album’s title track  ‘Wake Up People! ‘ quickly gained radio play from many including Dan Hegarty and Tom Dunne who made it his single of the week, playing it twice in one night – the song which instigated his ‘Two From Tommy’ program sting (a la John Peel‘s seminal ‘Teenage Kicks‘ broadcasting moment) and played it every night for three weeks straight.

In May 2022, Sack released the 25th Anniversary edition of their classic album ‘Butterfly Effect’, on vinyl for the first time ever and their new album, Wake Up People is their first album of new material since 2001’s Adventura Majestica.and is released on the band’s own reactivated Jetset Junta label.

Sack’s first-ever single ‘What Did the Christians Ever Do For Us?’ was single of the week in both the NME and Melody Maker. In 1993 they signed to UK Indie label Lemon Records, who released their first album ‘You Are What You Eat’, followed by 1997’s’ ‘Butterfly Effect’’ which was produced by Stereolab producer Paul Tipler and Garret ‘Jacknife’ Lee, U2/REM The album contained one of their most memorable tracks, ‘ Laughter Lines‘, a song Morrissey said, “should be Number One forever.” At Morrissey’s behest, Sack opened for him on his 1999 Oye Esteban World Tour taking in mainland Europe, the UK & Ireland, and the USA. The former Smiths singer also included ‘Colorado Springs‘ (from ‘You Are What You Eat’) on his hand-picked NME CD Songs to Save Your Life before inviting the band to open for him again on a European tour in 2002.

Wake Up People! signals a triumphant return. Sack will head out on the road in support of the new album with a short tour of Ireland and the UK throughout October and November, which begins with a special guest slot with The Stunning at the 3Olympia as well as shows at The Button Factory, Dublin, Coughlan’s in Cork, The Treehouse in Frome, a slot at the Shiiine On Festival, Minehead (with Echo & The Bunnymen, Lightning Seeds etc) before finishing up at Kilkenny’s legendary Cleere’s.
