NEWS: Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angels share ‘Triage’ ahead their upcoming album

Hull lo-fi indie pop trio Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angels have just announced that their new single The Optometrist will be released on 14th February 2025. Recorded during lockdown alongside new additions John Andrew (Kingmaker) on drums, and Sarah Shiels on bass, The Optometrist is a thrilling new collection of material from the Yorkshire cult hero. To celebrate the news, today the band have shared the soulful lead single ‘Triage.’ Following a first spin with John Kennedy at Radio X, the trio played a special BBC introducing live session for Jericho Keys.

Triage’ is a tender, soul-baring, Lynchian dream of a song. It begins by telling a confused story of loneliness and despair against wandering arpeggiated guitars, breaking down and confiding in the listener before resolving into a crescendo of warm saxophones and fuzzed guitars, the slap-back echo throughout evoking Bowie at his most soulful.

Commenting on the track, Matt Edible says: “I’ve always wanted to produce something that might be considered as “soulful” and I definitely think that’s the mood of this song. Of course, it’s never quite that straightforward with my songwriting and it takes in some pretty weird imagery, but I think it all just about makes sense by the end. Plus I got to layer those big saxophones on there.”

Matt Edible has been a jewel in the crown of Hull’s music scene for many years and alongside his new outfit The Obtuse Angels is producing the most vital music of his career.

From fronting cult avant-pop heroes Edible 5ft Smiths to leading BBC 6music’s Tom Robinson favourites The Holy Orders, he has consistently produced memorable and captivating music—now, Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angels feels like the inevitable denouement of his journey so far.

Their debut album Stairgazing (2018) featured the lush production and multi-instrumentation of Joe Bennett (Goldrush/St. Etienne), the drumming skills of Mike Monaghan (Gaz Coombes/Willie J Healey) and contained a wide variety of material ranging from the sublime, swooping, sweary love song ‘Astronauts’ to the anthemic indie earworm ‘Nightclubbing’.  It also showcased a love of a wide range of styles from post-rock to Americana, leading to the American alt-legend Josh T. Pearson to proclaim Edible as “the best thing out of Hull since the Humber Bridge!”

The band appeared at Truck Festival and Hull’s flagship Humber Street Sesh this summer, recently supporting The Bug Club on a hometown appearance. They headline Trinity Live, Hull on 19th September, and will be announcing further live dates over the coming months.
