Jack Jones – Jack Jones (Strap Originals)

Over the Summer, Jack Jones unveiled details of his self-titled debut solo album, alongside UK tour dates that will follow its release. Best known as the dynamic frontman of Welsh indie rock band Trampolene and guitarist for Pete Doherty, Jack is already a familiar name in the music world. However, his solo career marks a bold new chapter, as he steps away from his guitar to explore a fresh, cutting-edge sound that signals an exciting evolution in his artistry.

A true wordsmith, Jack isn’t one to shy away from tackling difficult subjects. His debut album opens with a poignant track written during the first wave of the COVID-19 lockdown. Titled ‘Make It So’, the song is a fitting introduction, starting with a slow, reflective tone before building into a triumphant celebration – mirroring the relief and joy many felt as lockdown restrictions lifted. The album’s lead single, ‘Breathe’, follows next, featuring a lush, keyboard-laden backdrop and a rolling beat that complements Jack’s raw, unflinching lyrics about the struggles of living with anxiety and the self-medication used to keep it at bay. This is followed by the uplifting track ‘Gladys’, where Jack’s lyrical prowess truly shines. In a humorously candid tribute, he celebrates the unconventional methods of his therapist, blending wit and honesty in a way that showcases his unique storytelling style.

‘Peaches Out of Reach’ is another track that Jack released in the months prior to the albums release. It opens with a nostalgic synth line reminiscent of classic video game soundtracks, gradually building with percussive elements as it reaches the chorus. Jack’s gentle vocals explore life’s simple pleasures, creating a sense of calm and reflection. Next comes ‘The Mountains (You & I)’, a deeply personal song where Jack’s lyrics tackle his own inner battles. Described by Jack as “a ray of hope glimpsed in detox”, it was written after his time at a silent Buddhist monastery, where he sought to overcome addiction. With a steady beat and a catchy melody, Jack’s hopeful vocals guide listeners through his journey, reflecting both the struggles and newfound appreciation for his second chance at life.

A sharp contrast to the previous track, ‘Who Let The Bass Bump Through The Floor’ comes in next, loud and raucous from the very first beat. Driven by heavy percussion and an infectious groove, it perfectly complements Jack’s playful spoken-word lyrics, inspired by the wild house parties of his youth. The energy continues with ‘MDMADAY’, which maintains the party atmosphere, as Jack narrates a countdown to payday, eagerly anticipating his next high. The track’s upbeat disco shuffle captures the euphoria, while a haunting, distorted vocal lingers in the background, symbolising the inevitable comedown, and darker side of the high.

‘Dumb Phone’ opens with the sound of bells ringing, reminiscent of a phone call, setting the tone for a technophobe’s rant about smartphones and social media. As the phrase “dumb phone” loops in the background, Jack’s rapid-fire lyrics and sharp delivery shine, while the laid-back chorus highlights the strength and versatility of his vocals, offering a smooth contrast to the track’s energetic verses. The hypnotic ‘What You Waiting For’ is another standout that showcases Jack’s vocal range. With its bass-heavy, dancefloor-inspired sound, the track blends various vocal techniques, from layered harmonies to a softly sung chorus. Completely distinct from anything Jack has done before, this track – and indeed the entire album – feels experimental, with each song offering something fresh and unexpected, continuously surprising the listener.

A pop musing on the theme of disappointment, the penultimate track ‘Let Down’ features one of Jack’s catchiest choruses. Known for scribbling down quirky phrases and observations from everyday life, Jack’s creative process shines through in this track, with the memorable line “such a fucking let down” in the chorus being a prime example of his unique lyrical insight. The album concludes on an emotional note with ‘Love & Tears’, a piano-driven track that originated as a poem Jack penned following the passing of his grandmother. The track’s poignant nature is deepened by samples of his grandmother, as well as contributions from his sister and girlfriend, honoring the influential women in his life. With autotune used as a subtle instrument, the heartfelt chorus underscores the depth and sincerity of Jack’s lyrics, bringing the album to a powerful and introspective close.

Featuring fresh, melodic sounds and lyrics that range from playful to deeply heartfelt, the album stands as a remarkable masterpiece, capturing the breadth of Jack’s artistic evolution. With each track offering a unique blend of lyrics, music, and vocals, the album highlights Jack’s impressive versatility and leaves us guessing about his next direction. One thing is certain, though: whatever comes next, Jack’s bound to soar.
