Mercury Prize winning singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka has announced his new album Small Changes, due out in November. The album is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to Kiwanuka’s eponymous third LP, the Mercury Prize winning, and Grammy nominated, KIWANUKA, released in 2019. To celebrate, Kiwanuka has released to singles from the album, ‘Lowdown (part i)’ and ‘Lowdown (part ii)’.
Small Changes was produced alongside Danger Mouse and Inflo, the same studio team behind KIWANUKA and its equally proclaimed Love & Hate. The core trio has expanded into a wish-list ensemble that features legendary bassist Pino Palladino (D’Angelo, John Mayer, Beyoncé) and Jimmy Jam of the iconic Jam and Lewis songwriting and production duo (Janet Jackson, Prince, SOS Band).
The two new songs follow the release of ‘Floating Parade’ back in July. ‘Lowdown (part i)’ is a low-slung, bass-heavy, guitar-soul track. Whilst ‘Lowdown (part ii)’ reverberates on the atmospheric, string-soaked psychedelia and extended guitar soloing that Kiwanuka has become almost synonymous with over his past two records.
At the end of the month, Kiwanuka will play three shows in Canada and the US before joining Brittany Howard on a joint headline North American tour. Beginning on 29 September in Philadelphia, stops include Boston, New York, Vancouver, and Los Angeles before the tour concludes in Paso Robles on 19 October. Full tour dates and tickets can be found here.
Small Changes is out on 15 November 2024 via Polydor Records. Pre-order here.
