Pogues 1984

NEWS: The Pogues announce 40th anniversary edition of ‘Red Roses For Me’ album

Nearly a year after the death of their frontman Shane MacGowan, The Pogues are to re-release their debut album to mark its fortieth anniversary. Red Roses For Me is to be reissued on two brand new formats: recycled red vinyl containing the 2013 remix of the album and a double-CD set, including the album and and a bonus disc of B-sides and the band’s BBC sessions for John Peel and David ‘Kid’ Jensen from 1984.

These anniversary formats will be released on 18th October and are available to pre-order here.

Though the album only reached no.89 in the UK album charts on release, it was critically acclaimed with the likes of the music weeklies of the period NME, Melody Maker and Sounds effusive in their praise:

Melody Maker stated: ‘Theirs is a gut reaction to traditional music – and with it comes all the motion, intensity and vigour that has largely been lost to these songs since the early days of the folk revival in the Sixties.‘ Meanwhile the NME said, ‘The music has never been away, and The Pogues in all their irreverent ‘seriousness’ have taken it out on a limb, where it all started, where it belongs,’ while Sounds concluded: ‘It manages to convey the sullied, brazen and raucous spirit of their live set very effectively.’
