PREVIEW: Krankenhaus Festival

When: 23 – 25 August 2024

Where: Muncaster Castle, Ravenglass, Cumbria, England

Krankenhaus, the annual festival brought to you by Sea Power and Muncaster Castle, returns to the Lake District at the end of August – and it’s a truly special coalescence of music, art, literature and nature. Set in the castle’s awe-inspiring grounds, the Cumbrian landscape is something to cherish and speaks to the bucolic beauty of Sea Power’s music. The music this year is defined by Sea Power’s chaotic sense of imagination and adventure, as the bill is peppered with kindred spirits. Packed to the brim with the most idiosyncratic modern rock music – Friday sees sets from Goat Girl, Nadine Shah and Lawrence in his Mozart Estate guise, and the rest of the weekend pays host to absolute national treasures Hey Colossus!, Snapped Ankles, and Sea Power themselves playing two sets which are bound to be full of surprises and deep cuts. BC Camplight‘s cathartic and humourous songwriting tops the bill on Saturday night, and Fat White Family’s Lias Saoudi brings a rare solo performance on the Sunday afternoon.

There’s also plenty to soak in outside of the music, with literary talks from Cathi Unsworth (on her study of Goth culture in Season Of The Witch), John Doran and Sapphire Goss, John Robb and Luke Turner. Of course, the glorious landscape itself plays a part, with ample opportunities for fell walking, bird watching and beach combing. More family friendly activities include the very popular dog competition – this year judged by Lias Saoudi – and the chance to ride the La’al Ratty steam train.

Of course, for the more nocturnally inclined, DJ sets will play into the night. The beautifully esoteric billing includes Bella Union, Unemployable Welsh Scum and Gan Yam Sounds. Priding itself on being an inclusive festival for people across a spectrum of ages and tastes, Krankenhaus is an oasis in a desert of hyper-corporate festivals – here the patron feels part of a warm community in a genuinely idyllic setting.
