NEWS: Radio Free Alice share new single, ‘Johnny’

Radio Free Alice have announced their forthcoming Polyester EP which will arrive on 21st August . The Australian five-piece have also released their new single ‘Johnny’. The bones of the new EP were put together in Melbourne before being completed by Radio Free Alice during their recent European visit. Intriguingly studios, backstage areas, tour vans, street corners, hostel bunk beds and train stations became stopgap recording locations around the cities of London, Paris, Bristol, Dublin, Nottingham and Hradec Kralove (Czech Republic), as the band captured moments where opportunity and inspiration combined.

New single ‘Johnny’ pairs post-punk’s urgency with the clinical coolness of goth-pop and was recorded with Nao Anzai in Melbourne before seeing additional production from Ewan Pearson (Foals, Warpaint, Confidence Man) in London. Radio Free Alice expand on the track, sharing:

“’Johnny’ is about growing up and feeling isolated. It follows the narrative of a young guy who runs away from his very religious family because he feels alone in it.”

A nod to the likes of Talking Heads, The Cure and The Smiths are audible throughout Radio Free Alice’s output, paired with more recent influences including Parquet Courts, Ought, The Strokes and HighSchool. However there is no doubt that their sound is their own, combining melodic bass lines, urgent drumbeats, the occasional sax and a musical swagger which is beguiling as it is captivating.
