PREVIEW: Deer Shed Festival 2024

When: 26th – 29th July 2024

Where: Baldersby Park, Topcliffe, North Yorkshire, England

Come the last weekend in July the 14th edition of the Deer Shed Festival will be upon us. Set in a superbly landscaped country park close to the major A1 and A19 roads, this ever-marvellous annual celebration of music, comedy, arts, science, theatre, and sport for people of all ages once again promises to be something a bit special.

As always, there is something for everyone at Deer Shed be it music, comedy and shows, literary and spoken word, cinema, science, workshops, outdoor arts, sports, under 5s, wellbeing, or wilderwild, the festival’s special place where music and nature converge.

Another impressive Music line-up is headed up by Bombay Bicycle Club, The Coral, and CMAT with a tremendous undercard that includes such musically diverse acts as BC Camplight, The Go! Team, Los Bitchos, Stornoway, King Creosote, Jalen Ngonda, and John Francis Flynn.

Comedy and Shows are equally well catered for with appearances over the weekend from The Horne Section, Shaparak Khorsandi, Andrew Maxwell, Sikhism, and Abandoman plus many more great acts besides.

The Literary and Spoken Word section of Deer Shed is always hugely popular, and this year will be no exception with the likes of the Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham, writer and performer Vanessa Kissule, Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, author and screenwriter John Niven, and writer and journalist Aniefiok Ekpoudom all to be found in thought-provoking conversation over the weekend.

Every year Deer Shed Festival is developed around a theme. Retro Futures is the theme for 2024, where nostalgia, science, technology and fantasy will all unite.  This is no more evident than in the Science and Workshop areas of the festival.  The science tent is partnered this year with Kielder Observatory and their amazing astronomers will be bringing loads of new space-themed activities to Baldersby Park this summer. And the workshop programme promises something for everyone from Alien Spaceships to Rocket Take-Off.

And all of this is before we even get to the fun and games associated with the Outdoor Arts, including theatre, musician walkabouts, and site installations; to Sports from wrestling to American football, and all sorts of brilliant activities for the Under 5s.

Wilderwild will feature a wide range of activities from pottery to woodcraft and yoga raves to twilight kayaking adventures, whilst the Cinema will be showing some absolute classics including The Greatest Showman and Back to the Future alongside a series of wonderful short films through Deer Shed’s new partnership with the London International Animation Festival.
