Today we are debuting the video for ‘Live in the Beautiful’ the brand new single from Irish duo Colm O’Connell and Rory McDaid under their artist moniker Rezo, released on 10th May 2024. A gentle, meditative and wistful track that’s croaky yet bittersweet vocals remind you of the likes of Sparklehorse or Bill Callahan. Its hymnal quality delicately balances tragic scenes with a yearning for the past and fleeting moments of hope. When asked about the lyrical theme Colm explains, “the track depicts life at its most gritty; the addicts, the street-workers and the fights. It’s these everyday tragedies that feed a nostalgic desire to be somewhere more beautiful and innocent, like maybe the past“. Sitting at the more mellow, hushed end of the album’s spectrum, The Age of Self Help is due for release on 12th July 2024 and produced by Montreal heavyweight Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, The National, The Weather Station).
Colm said,
“The video captures Georgian Dublin in all its finery as the scene setter for this song – the place where the everyday tragedies described unfold albeit that what we see instead is floating visuals of a largely desolate city bathed in early morning light. The video was shot on the hottest day of the year just after first light giving it the look and feel of a drunken walk home from an all-nighter. The middle 8 is genuine super 8 footage of Rory and his family taken when he was a kid for the ultimate in nostalgic visuals.”
The Age of Self Help follows their sophomore album Sew Change (2022) and their debut long player Travalog (2021). The pair have collaborated remotely since the Covid pandemic with O’Connell based in Dublin and McDaid in Málaga, Spain. Rezo is from the Spanish, translating as ‘I pray’.
The Age of Self Help by Rezo’s comprises deft melodies, imaginative arrangements and intriguing lyrical narratives which producer Marcus Paquin has artfully curated into something that will stand against the best of his catalogue.
