Video of the Week #276: Fig by Four – Otherwirldly

Fig by Four is the solo project of the Leeds’ multi-instrumentalist, Sarah Statham, whose debut album Capture Reveal was released last October through her local independent label and DIY collective, Bomb The Twist. An authentic, assured record, it rightly received widespread critical acclaim. ‘Otherwirldly’ is the rather wonderful opening track from Capture Reveal and it now comes to us with an equally captivating video shot and edited by Jen Morris.

‘Otherwirldly ’ just leaps out of the grooves with such a supernatural spring in its step. It quickly gathers some serious momentum as it motors through the rural landscapes of the accompanying video. The potency of Statham’s voice drives the song’s melody along those country lanes, past open skies and rainbows to a place that lies somewhere between this world and the next. It’s a transcendental collaboration of sound and vision.

Sarah Statham has been a stalwart of the West Yorkshire DIY music scene for a number of years now. As well as her work with Fig by Four – where she writes and records everything – she is the touring drummer with Living Body and bassist and backing vocalist with another local band, Crake. To an already impressive creative CV she can add notable appearances with Big Thief and The Cribs as well as a Masters in Critical and Cultural Theory.

When Fig by Four play live, Sarah Statham is joined on stage by some of her friends and together they have the following dates lined up:

April 2024

Thursday 4th: Wakefield – The Establishment

Friday 12th: Leeds – Hyde Park Book Club

Saturday 20th: Sheffield – Hatch
