Rising Hastings trio Borough Council have released new track, ‘Casino,’ as part of Speedy Wunderground’s single series. With a digital and limited 7″ vinyl release, they join the ranks of notable artists like Squid, black midi, Kae Tempest and Loyle Carner on Dan Carey’s influential label.
‘Casino’ comes six months after the self-released debut ‘Prescribed’ (one of this writer’s tracks of the year). The accompanying blurb teases out a little bit more info on an enigmatic band that is, maybe intentionally, almost impossible to Google (seriously, we ended up down a rabbit hole of refuse collection timetables and council tax band disputes). However, Borough Council lets the music do the chinwagging here, and while there aren’t a lot of vocals, there is a thrilling spontaneity and elasticity to their austere, lo-fi / no-wave sound. The video, below, isn’t half bad either.
The band, comprised of brothers Haydn and Joe Ackerley, and Tom Healey, describe how it all came about: “When Dan saw us play live, Casino was our opener, so that was his first impression of us. It’s basically instrumental, and it felt like a weird choice for a single. That’s what made it exciting. It’s the intro, that’s its purpose. It sets the tone… ” They continue, “We wrote Casino a few weeks before the session, and it stayed unfinished up until then. ‘Cause the Speedy ethos is all about capturing a raw moment and the energy of the room, it made total sense for us to finish it on the spot with Dan. It took us as long to write as it did to record and we finished early and had a pint.”

The single will be available on 7″ on 26th January here, including a dub remix B side by Dan Carey, ‘Dubino’.
