Video of the Week #264: Scaler – New Symbols

Bristol four-piece Scaler (fka Scalping) have shared their new single titled ‘New Symbols’ which, as with their previous single ‘Loam‘ was produced by electronic musician and DJ, Daniel Avery. This collaboration has them lean further into their club and dance-based influences, the results of which are thrilling. Speaking on the single, SCALER says:
“With ‘New Symbols’ we wanted to act quickly on our instincts and create something a bit more rough and ready. We started with a sturdy, winding groove before adding the blasts of alien vocals and industrial noise. The focus was exploring different flavours of distortions across all instruments whilst remaining functional at its core, which we especially enjoyed sculpting in the middle shoegazey section – which is particularly fun live.”

The accompanying video is a mesmeric interpretation of the track. The euphoric, industrial soundscape is encapsulated within a visual which is perhaps the bubbling of some unknown substance. Its metallic look is perfect for the industrial clanking of the synths and percussion while the hypnotic bubbling replicates the throbbing bass and leftfield samples. The collaboration with Daniel Avery is working out beautifully.
