Today, Edwin R. Stevens shares ‘Purgatory Game’ along with an accompanying video by Alex Humphreys – a visual artist from North Wales, now based in Rome.
This is the third single from forthcoming new album God On All Fours, and follows songs ‘Only Child’ and ‘You Can’t Win’.
God On All Fours is Stevens’ most conventional-ish album to date and by far his bravest and most approachable. His straight, for want of a better word, story holds on to his lo-fi origins but offers up a more honest, bare reflection of his surreal and touching songwriting.
‘This song used to be two songs,’ Stevens says of ‘Purgatory Game’, ‘both written when I moved back to Wales, spliced together. It’s supposed to be a kind of reprieve from the rest of the album, uplifting, or whatever…’
Here in 2023, Edwin in performing under his own name, steps further away from his alias Irma Vep. Probably the best thing, though on reflection we’d pay very good money to see fans of the new spiky eight part HBO telly show rock up to his gigs expecting something quite different.
