J. Madden has just shared his stunning new single ‘Dawn,’ the first track since 2021’s debut solo album, Same Day As Yesterday. James Madden is best known as the songwriter of the art-pop band Seatbelts and indie quartet Hooton Tennis Club.
Latest track, ‘Dawn‘ opens with the summery ‘dawn chorus’ of birdsong underpinned by nostalgic keys, and lush, poignant vocals. Madden paints a retro, domestic scene of ‘carpeted floors,’ ‘lampshades and French doors’ lacing childhood warmth with melancholy for times passed. The song swims in widescreen domestic bliss. Slanted sepia soundscapes swim in lush harmonic waters as he sings, “We were lucky for a while each summertime,” soaring in memories, anchored by the depth of his mellifluous vocals.
Speaking of the track James Madden said, “I was lacking roots when I wrote ‘Dawn’ and living in my Nissan Micra. Eventually, I settled at my girlfriend’s parents. They have this beautiful boudoir grand piano, a Bechstein, that I played in a plushly carpeted room everyday, surrounded by gild framed family photographs on the walls. I was reading ‘Real Estate’ by Deborah Levy who explores themes of home, so I indulged in my own nostalgia: ‘Aufwiedersehen Pet’ on the telly, Gerry Rafferty on vinyl. Long slow summers and a childish sense of security.”‘
