LIVE: Soul Glo – Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff, 22/06/23

Off the back of a particularly powerful, and potentially career-defining, set at Coachella a few months back, Philadelphia-based Soul Glo found themselves in Cardiff for the latest date in their UK and Europe tour.

While the grandeur of the downstairs floor of the Womanby Street venue might not compare to that of Coachella, the heat in the room was most certainly desert-like. So, with a sweaty Welsh crowd ready to bring the action, it was up to Soul Glo themselves to deliver.

The night began with a rough start, and not in a good way, microphone issues hindered the sound of Pierce’s (Vocalist) singing, to the point where it was somewhat lost amongst the fast-paced noise produced by the rest of the band. While this might have bothered some crowds, it was no issue for those in attendance, who gleefully pushed and shoved one another regardless.

With smiles on faces and sweat dripping from every pore, the crowd continued to lap up what Soul Glo was putting down, with the incredible GG Guerra showing off some mesmerising guitar work throughout the set.

The crowd roared with the end and start of each new song, but it was ‘Driponomics’ and ‘Gold Chain Punk (whogonbeatmyass)‘ that received the loudest responses, both from their critically-acclaimed album Diaspora Problems that was released early in 2022. With the latter the last song of the set, the crowd responded, with attempted stage dives, mic grabs, and sweaty bodies being flung around the space in front of the stage.

Energy like this is exactly why Soul Glo have very quickly found themselves at the forefront of discussion when it comes to rising hardcore punk bands, and while it might have been their first time in the Welsh capital, you’d be foolish to expect it to be their last.
