Rising Irish indie artist, Amy Ellen, weaves dream pop with 90s underground verve. The Dublin artist is currently living in the French Alps on the shores of Lake Geneva, a spot which she describes as “undeniably beautiful and inspiring everyday.” As a fan of Green Day, Broken Social Scene, Soccer Mommy and Kurt Vile, Amy’s latest track ‘Free,‘ released today, reflects those influences, merging jangly, gritty 90s slacker rock riffs with ethereal vocals. Her slanted melodies glide from intimate to anthemic soundscapes, dancing over a bed of undulating riffs. Her dynamic vocals are as lush as her homeland, layered organically over gently biting riffs as jagged and majestic as the Alps themselves. It’s that juxtaposition of gritty riffs capped with the snow-white purity of the vocals that makes it so triumphant. Noting Santigold, Fazerdaze and Blondie as influences, the punchy drums and bass form a bed for Ellen’s dreamy vocals, creating a blissful energy as the song charges forward.
With a soaring chorus, the song is crafted skilfully and is rich with breezy harmonies echoing the fresh breeze of the Alps. The melody takes on an anthemic narrative all of its own as she sings “Free to do what I want.” This song was made to be played with the windows open on a road trip with the wind flowing through your hair or soundtracking the apex of an indie film.
Amy said, “The title speaks for itself. It’s about having the freedom to do what you want, it feels very relevant in regards to our recent re-location”. The Dublin artist refers to her move to the ‘undeniably beautiful and inspiring’ French Alps earlier this year with her partner and guitarist. After the success of her previous single ‘Day Dreamin’, Amy was extensively featured on RTÉ Radio 1. She followed up with ‘Falling‘, establishing her new sound and received airplay from Seattle’s alternative radio KEXP.
It’s shaping up to be a busy few months for Amy as she played her international debut in Geneva, (Switzerland) at the beginning of the month. followed by a string of tour dates around France this Summer. Follow Amy Ellen for more details:
