Berlin-based Peruvian artist, Sofia Kourtesis, has just shared her new single ‘Madres’ which is out now on Ninja Tune. The single marks Kourtesis’ first new music since the release of ‘Estación Esperanza (feat. Manu Chao)‘ in January last year. Overflowing with open-hearted technicolour, ‘Madres’ finds Sofia further honing her lighter-than-air vocals. As she continues building a sound that she has made so distinctly her own, new technical and vocal flourishes can be heard. Speaking of the track, Sofia says,
“This song is about my mother, her mother, my sisters who are mothers, my brothers who are mothers, and all the LGBTQIA+ members who are mothers to their communities. Madres has no gender. Madres loves to protect the ones you love. If you get lost, follow your mother’s voice, they will always bring you back. I also want to dedicate this song to Peter Vajkoczy, a brain surgeon who has become the hope of my own mother! He gives people hope by daring the most complicated surgeries in the world; he believes in miracles, love, and the strength to protect loved ones. Life goes by quickly. Life is fragile.” Listen here:
Her first music of 2023, ‘Madres’ follows an unstoppable few years for Sofia. ‘Estación Esperanza‘ was included in many high profile end of year lists. At the end of last year, Sofia played her debut UK headline shows at London’s Lafayette and Manchester’s YES, both of which sold out straight away. Across the summer she delivered standout performances at Glastonbury, Green Man, Wide Awake, Primavera and more as well as playing support shows opening for Caribou. These performances led to her being named as one of Mixmag’s Top Fifteen acts of the year, capping off the year with the release of a brilliantly energetic and moving session with Resident Advisor.
