Public Image Ltd. (PiL) have returned with a new track ‘Hawaii.’ In perhaps a surprising move, the band, fronted by John Lydon, are confirmed to take part in the competition to represent Ireland at the 67th annual Eurovision Song Contest.
The song is a love letter to John’s wife of nearly five decades, Nora, who is living with Alzheimer’s. A pensive, personal yet universal love song, the song sees John reflecting on their lifetime well spent and in particular one of their happiest moments together in Hawaii.
Speaking about the single, the one-time Sex Pistols frontman Johnny Rotten said: ‘It is dedicated to everyone going through tough times on the journey of life, with the person they care for the most. It’s also a message of hope that ultimately love conquers all.’
The competition will take place from 9.30pm on 3rd February 2023 on Ireland’s The Late Late Show. ‘Hawaii‘ is available on all digital platforms now and will be released on limited edition 7” vinyl later in the year.
PiL were formed in 1978, releasing their first album First Issue later that year. Their most recent album, What The World Need Now, was released in 2015. The current line-up of Lydon, Lu Edmonds, Scott Firth and Bruce Smith is the longest stable line-up in the band’s history.
