South-east London based artist, songwriter and producer Merrick Winter has released his latest single “Veneer” from his forthcoming debut Ep. Splitting his time between London and LA after graduating from King College London to study English Literature, Winter has since carved out a transatlantic career as a touring guitarist for pop and folk alike. Written in the heat of the pandemic, Veneer is a product of the very first day of collaboration between Winter and co-producer Patrick James Fitzroy.
Throughout Veneer, Winters voice merges with distant eerie sounds and dusted with acoustic uplifting guitar strums. Speaking on the new single Winter writes “This was one of those songs that just kind of poured out, both in the writing, and in the studio”.
Elaborating on the songs late 60’s and early 70’s songwriting influences that merge with current musical ideologies, Merrick Winter writes “We wrote out some ground rules for this EP in a pub as I remember, one of which was to be hyper-intentional with each recorded element; to not take shortcuts in the box – 90 percent of what you hear is from analogue sources – a lot of space-echo feedback and tape printing.”
Veneer is out now on all streaming platforms.
