Nashville singer-songwriter, Soccer Mommy, has just released the latest single ‘newdemo’ from her forthcoming album , Sometimes, Forever, out on 24th June via Loma Vista. The album and its earlier singles, ‘Unholy Affliction’ , ‘Shotgun’ and ‘Bones’ have already received high praise.
The latest single, ‘newdemo’ spins delicately layered harmonies and mystical synths into an end-of-the-world reverie. Dreamy yet melancholic lyrics like, “Sometimes I dream there’s a gate to the garden/That only the earth could break through,” bring a sense of magic to the darkness, all delivered with vocals of liquid honey, with flecks of fire. The introspective distortion echoes Slowdive, while the use of the minor key mirrors the melancholy of the lyrics. The tone suddenly switches, midway, elevated by a defiant key change and ethereal harmonies, letting sparks of light glimmer though the shadows, with magical realist dreams weaving through the chorus. An impending apocalypse has never sounded so beautiful.
Sophie Allison, AKA Soccer Mommy, said, “I didn’t want to make something super depressing without a sense of magic…We played around with the space to make the song feel vast so ‘newdemo‘ had a huge transformation in the studio. It’s one of my favourites off the record.”
Sometimes, Forever, has been described as “Soccer Mommy’s boldest and most aesthetically adventurous work yet; a mesmerizing collection that feels both informed by the past and explicitly of the moment. It is some of her most sophisticated songwriting to date. Inspired by the concept that neither sorrow nor happiness is permanent. Sometimes Forever is a fresh peek into the mind of an artist who synthesizes retro sounds, personal tumult and the relatable disorder of modern life into original music that feels built to last.”
Soccer Mommy has previously toured with the likes of Vampire Weekend , Wilco, Paramore and Liz Phair and will be touring with Haim and War on Drugs this year as well as playing at End of the Road and Leisure Festivals. She will be doing a headline tour of the globe and a full run of UK shows this Autumn.
