Fans of the Riot Grrrl movement will delight in the third single, ‘Haze’ from London garage rock trio BERRIES. Their blend of gritty grunge, infectious indie, smart lyrics and soaring melodies are a bewitching glimpse into the treasures in store in their forthcoming album How We Function, which is out on 8th July.
The new single ‘Haze’ is a credit to their craftsmanship. It opens with a bluesy riff, the tease of a cymbal, reflective ‘poking and prodding’ of the lyrics, swelling to soaring harmonies, a grunge drenched chorus and metallic, pentatonic licks that would make Slash proud. There are echoes of The Breeders, Sleater Kinny, L7, Verruca Salt and Dream Wife in there which makes the new album even more exciting.
When asked about the new single, BERRIES explained, “Haze represents the barriers we often put up and how scary but also uplifting it can be when they break down. The ‘Haze’ descends when least expected and is hard to fight through, but it is important to recognise the strength it takes to open up and fight past the intrusive thoughts and be the best version of yourself,” and that triumphant narrative is clearly reflected in the soundscape of this track.
Haze is just as biting as BERRIES’ earlier tracks, ‘We are Machines’ and ‘Wall of Noise,’ but with a more measured edge, showcasing the band’s tight musicianship and ability to find optimism during the dark times.
BERRIES have been celebrated by Huw Stephens, on BBC Radio 1 and Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music, together with oFred Perry Subculture, Time Out and Record Collector. They will be supporting garage rock veterans The Subways, across Germany and the unstoppable Jim Bob, across the UK, along with appearances at 2000 Trees and Kendal Calling Festival. They will also be headlining a tour with their new album How We Function, out on 8th July on Xtra Mile Records. BERRIES said, “We couldn’t have put more into it, we are so proud of the end result.”
