Real Lies have unveiled their intoxicating and warmly nostalgic new video ‘Dream On’. The single is lifted from her second album Lad Ash – due April 22nd through their own imprint, UNREAL.
‘Dream On’ finds frontman Kevin Lee Kharas spiralling into a breathlessly passionate narrative that sketches out finding new love at Eternal, the lawless club night that Real Lies ran with their friends in Holloway, London. Built on heady rave synths, breakbeats and a massive chorus, it pays poignant tribute to the people and nights that change the course of your life forever; a rush of imagery flooding in, love forged amongst the tribes, anthemic, besotted and visceral memories you will never forget.
The track arrives with an accompanying visual directed by Jacek Zmarz, which gives a glimpse into the group’s private fantasy of idyllic English summertime. Speaking about the video, Kharas says:
“Most artists’ summer music videos end up looking like wet dreams or holiday adverts. I wanted to capture something more real about the English summer. The way it crashlands here one day and makes everything look absurd. It made me think of spending school holidays down the skatepark and seeing the local goths sweating through their dungeon master outfits. There’s a self-destructive loyalty to tribalism that I find extremely admirable. So we broke into this abandoned mansion deep in the London shadowlands and shot it on the grounds.”
“The song is also a love song, a song about sadness being brought out into the light. I don’t tend to write happy songs. But when you fall in love at first sight surrounded by all your best friends in a basement club on a humid Thursday night in July, it’s hard to remain neutral. Especially when you factor in the 2-for-1 deal on bottles of Canei.”
Having garnered attention over the past year with a run of totemic singles in the shape of ‘Oh Me, Oh My (Nicotine Patch)’, ‘Late Arcades’, ‘Since I’, ‘Your Guiding Hand’, and now ‘Dream On’, the release of Lad Ash will give fans the chance to hear the full story.
In the years that have passed since the band’s debut album – 2015’s Real Life – they have undergone a significant makeover in both lineup and sound. Now operating as a duo, lyricist Kevin Lee Kharas and producer Patrick King have perfected their unique formula of deeply autobiographical stories set to yearning production that both pays homage to and evolves the dance music they’ve obsessed over throughout their youth. Refining his renowned night-walker observations, Kharas is unbound in his lyricism on Lad Ash – peering deep into his past, we hear stories of addiction, grief, heartbreak and the still-unsolved disappearance of a teenage best friend. ”
