With rumours of album number two on its way from Adwaith, 2022 will be a special one for the Welsh Music Prize winners. So we thought, let’s join them for their first gig of the year in Wrexham. It’s been a while.

Adwaith haven’t played a live show since October, what with restrictions in Wales so recently lifted. Tonight they’re meant to support Porridge Radio at Ty Pawb Arts Hub, as part of the Out of FOCUS: Music Hub artist showcases and industry meet-ups across various locations in Wrexham this winter.

Like so much over the past two years COVID put paid to the evening’s plans; Porridge Radio are infected by the lurgy and can’t come. So an Adwaith headliner, with Eitha Da opening, is organised at indie music bar The Parish.

Hollie Singer (vocals, guitar), Gwenllian Anthony (bass, keys, mandolin) and drummer Heledd Owen arrive around teatime, after spending the afternoon rehearsing at nearby ROC2 Studios. While they wait to soundcheck, we kidnap/take them for a walk* (*delete as applicable) around Wrexham. Adwaith are out and about in the town a lot, having played the festival and numerous events here.

But the trio don’t know about the haunted steps a stone’s throw from The Parish. We take them there. Disappointingly, there are no signs of any paranormal activity.

Around the corner, the moon and streetlights cast an eerie glow and throw out shadows.

What with bare arms in the chilly night air, the band head back to the venue. The posters are up on the walls!

At the soundcheck, the band are relaxed and pleased to be back in a venue. The Britpop soundtrack playing in the background feels a bit weird as Adwaith get set up, but at the end of the day it’s all rock n roll isn’t it.

Then it’s time for a cuppa and a breather.

Support band, Wrexham’s Eitha Da kick off the night. They had a show in Liverpool back in December cancelled due to COVID, as well as the Porridge Radio one this evening.  They describe themselves as ‘viscous globules of garage-fuzz/stoner-rock made with fizzy pop’. And do you know what, that’s pretty damn accurate!

Adwaith are live! We’re treated to songs from the new record, along with Adwaith classics ‘Lipstick Coch’, ‘Osain’ and ‘Lan Y Môr’. The band’s much acclaimed debut album ‘Melyn’ came out back in 2018, and they warn us from the stage they can’t tell us when the follow-up is out – or even what it’s called. Guess we’ll just have to wait…
