To mark International Women’s Day (IWD) 2021 today, the Music Venue Trust charity celebrates women who work in the UK’s independent venues.
Using the hashtag #WomenToTheFront, this week the trust and music venues across the country will be shining a light on the women so important to the grassroots music community which nourishes new and emerging talent and independent artists.
Sarah Claudine, Events, Projects & Communications at Music Venue Trust said, “We are very proud to have so many remarkable women contribute to MVT, from our core team and coordinators to our board of trustees and patrons and know that this diversity is reflective of the changing face of the wider live music community.”
MVT recently announced 6 new patrons, all women working in the music industry: rock duo Nova Twins, Welsh post-punk trio Adwaith, DJs Moxie and HAAi, singer-songwriter Kerri Watt, and Director of Mother Artists Live, booking agent Natasha Gregory.
‘Grassroot music venues are hugely important to us as people as well as a band,’ said Welsh Music Prize winners Adwaith, due to release their second album this summer. ‘Without these venues, we never would have thought that we could start a band (let alone singing in our native language). They are the fundamental building blocks for all artists and musicians all over the world. Without venues, there’s no artists. Without artists, there’s no music. Without music, there’s no culture.’
