The Leeds-based national opera company and leading UK arts organisation Opera North has joined forces with the British DIY record label Pressure Sounds to produce Dead ‘n’ Wake: Reset and Come Again, a podcast about reggae, dub and sound system, its history in the UK, and the music’s deep roots in Rastafarianism.
The podcast takes the form of a fascinating conversation between the turntablist, sound artist and recent Oram Award-winner Nicole Raymond (who DJs under the alias NikNak) and literary activist, theatre maker and published writer, Khadijah Ibrahiim.
Together the two local women explore their Jamaican heritage and intersperse their experiences with classic music from the Pressure Sounds catalogue including songs from the legendary Jamaican record producer and singer Lee “Scratch” Perry, Inner Circle lead singer Jacob Miller, celebrated toaster U-Roy and the late Bunny Lee alongside excerpts from their own collaboration and contribution to Opera North’s Resonance programme for UK-based BAME music-makers.
Dead ‘n’ Wake: Reset and Come Again is available to listen to now on Soundcloud, Spotify and Apple Podcasts, and further episodes are underway.
