Karima Francis released her moving new single ‘Carelessness Causes Fire’ last week. A song all about coming to terms with the past, today we are unveiling the accompanying nostalgic video handmade by Francis, with its footage retrieved from home movies recorded in the 1970s. Watch below.
Slowly enveloping on a swelling bed of Americana tinged instrumentals it gives space for Francis’s fantastically wistful vocal that shivers with the struggles of her formative years as an artist, ‘Carelessness Causes Fire’ is both a cautionary tale to the brave and a cripplingly candid reflection on the darker side of life in the music industry.
Francis says “The film is a self-made concept picture pieced together from old 1970s home movies clips and archived footage. I found it such a soothing experience making the video, the use of film is such a wonderful way to communicate.
I aimed to make a metaphorical film of images that show the contrast between pure untouched souls alongside distasteful and distressing images such as scorpions, cobras, and climate fires this is to symbolise the effect of trauma on someone’s life and the living world. Primarily the video and song are to help to raise awareness of mental health, particularly within the music industry. It’s so important all people feel they are not alone especially during these times. If anyone is suffering right now, please try to speak out. There are some great mental health charities out there that can help you today some include, @helpmusicians @bapam @musicsupport @musicmindsmatter.”
