Sheffield (via Lancaster) band Mr Ben & The Bens today share the surreal cosmic disco pop of ‘Transmissions‘ that layers a groovy baseline with delectable harmonies, listen to it below.
Its taken from their forthcoming album Who Knows Jenny Jones? which is out on 25 October on Bingo Records. A pivotal track on the concept album about a shrinking violet called Jenny Jones in 1970s Sheffield, the song is about Jenny’s abduction by aliens in a graveyard. The aliens impart disco knowledge to her through signals transmitted via a sensory deprivation tank.
“Mr Ben and The Bens is the brainchild of polymath musician Ben Hall. Originating from Lancaster’s thriving co-operative scene, Ben is now based in Sheffield and his adopted city has had a profound influence on the concept of the new album. Who Knows Jenny Jones an experimental pop exploration of a kitchen sink narrative with a celestial twist. It tells the tale of a shrinking violet called Jenny from an area of Sheffield called Pitsmoor in the 1970s, who gets abducted by aliens and becomes the best disco dancer in town.
“Mr Ben and The Bens have been touring and releasing records since 2017. In a short space of time he has been embraced by BBC 6 Music’s Marc Riley and toured with Lancaster hometown DIY legends The Lovely Eggs as well as indie guitar pop masters The Wave Pictures and art pop maestros British Sea Power. Being an integral part of the Bingo Records tight-knit community, they performed at the label’s First Anniversary package tour with label family Selection Box, Sun Drift and Dog Daisies.”
