Hailing from the French dance music mecca of Versailles, L’Impératrice (The Empress) are a slinky six-piece combo creating dreamy space disco that mixes the trippy electronic soundscapes of Lindstrom with the classic 70s sounds of Cerrone and Giorgio Moroder. Debut album Matahari is finally out in April, and new single ‘LÀ-HAUT‘ (‘Up there’) is a taster, albeit a more downbeat one, of what to expect. A bleepy, hypnotic synth motif bubbles over some 80s-style fretless bass on a track that gradually surges to a euphoric climax.
In the video, an office drone quits the face-melting tedium her robotic 9-to-5 existence and escapes from hell (literally – the company is called L’ENFER) to an idyllic, at times hallucinogenic vision of the French countryside, to which the lush, heavenly sound of ‘LÀ-HAUT‘ is the perfect accompaniment. A whole album’s worth of this stuff? Oui s’il vous plait.
