IDER have shared the intimate accompanying video for their enveloping and empowered new single ‘Mirror’ on Glassnote (Chvrches, Phoenix, and more). Produced by MyRiot, ‘Mirror’ arrives right off the back of summer release ‘You’ve Got Your Whole Life Ahead Of You Baby’. They’ve also announced a run of UK and European dates for next Spring.
‘Mirror’ is IDER’s breakup anthem, a journey which begins in the loss of self-identity felt after splitting with a partner, but unfurls into a defiant self-empowered statement; laced with entwined harmonies and a subtle marriage of guitars and beats. They say “It’s the journey of self-discovery as you learn to come back to yourself, and the acceptance that sometimes people are shit. But in the end, we will be ok.”
Like ‘YGYWLAOYB’, ‘Mirror’ is a result of recording sessions for the band’s debut album – slated for 2019 – with MyRiot (‘Mirror’) and Rodaidh McDonald (‘YGYWLAOYB’) – known for his work with Adele, Sampha and The xx.
The video was shot by Lily Rose Thomas on Bromley High Street and produced by Aleksandra Bilic. “We wanted to create a video for Mirror that reflected the honesty, vulnerability and power of the song. We worked with director Lily Rose Thomas, who brought to life the concept of sisterhood and female empowerment, which is at the heart of ‘Mirror’, and us as a duo..” the band’s Lily Somerville and Megan Markwick begin. “It was important to us that we challenged ourselves and were pushed out of our comfort zone, which we achieved with the help of choreographer Anna Engerström, who developed the movement from the emotion of the song and our instinctual performance.”
IDER laid down a marker in 2017 with soaring singles ‘Body Love’ and ‘Learn To Let Go’ – their first releases on Glassnote – and with ‘Mirror’ and ‘You’ve Got Your Whole Life Ahead Of You Baby’, they have built on that reputation. Continuing a run of totally sold-out London live shows in the past twelve months, IDER headlined a packed Village Underground – a venue that has proven a rite of passage for emerging artists on their way to the top – on 2 October. IDER performed at Appletree Garden in Germany and Wales’ Green Man this summer, with a date at Pitchfork Paris Avant Garde on 30 October which capped off their run of global tour dates from 2017, which included European dates with Oh Wonder and Ibeyi, as well as a slew of performances at Austin’s SXSW festival.
