Halloween season is well and truly upon us, so what better tune to celebrate the spookiest time of the year than a song about the slowest moving but the scariest monster on the block, the zombie? While we’re on the subject, what use is a song called ‘Zombie’; without an accompanying video with an appearance by a representative of the living dead to scare the daylights out of all and sundry?
Step up Lara Smiles, the London singer-songwriter whose debut album All For You dropped recently on the Wonky Pop label. Splicing her indie rock with a smidge of electronic experimentation, it’s all delivered with a keen ear for what constitutes a seriously unshakeable earworm. ‘Zombie’, produced by Jamie Graishon, is one of the album’s undisputed highlights. No surprise, then, that it’s been earmarked for a single release in its own right on November 2nd.
Augmented here with top-notch promo directed by Gareth Kay, with special effects and makeup by Dave Darko, the song is actually about a different type of living dead – someone who parties all night and struggles through their day job half asleep. Let’s face it, we’ve all been there.
The more eagle-eyed among you might even spot Lara herself, making a brief cameo appearance bumping into the video’s eponymous zombie hero.
