Totally Mild are a Melbourne quartet led by songwriter Elizabeth Mitchell, the sumptuous, spacious lush backdrops of their recent lead single ‘Today Tonight’ is laced with tumbling off-kilter rhythms and glistening guitar arpeggios and invested with Mitchell’s wonderfully arresting vocals that are at once uncertain, introspective and lovelorn: ripe with desires and dreams with affecting frankness. The Hollywood inspired video directed by Tobias Willis, is inspired by Sunset Boulevard and A Woman Under The Influence and see’s Mitchell all dressed up with nowhere to go.
Elizabeth Mitchell says Today Tonight was “Written during a long period of unemployment, ‘Today Tonight’ is quite literally me passing the days waiting for my girlfriend to come home from work. Sinking into the kind of depression that comes from doing nothing when you have the time to do whatever you want, the guilt of unproductivity. The house becomes a trap, you’re not interesting enough to leave it anyway. The video by Tobias Willis plays on the theme of faded glamour and isolation, drawing inspiration from films like Sunset Boulevard and A Woman Under the Influence.”
Video director, Tobias Willis, explains further; “After hearing the track and the initial concepts from the band I was thrilled when I was approached to make the video. I really enjoy any opportunity to incorporate that classic Hollywood cinema aesthetic into my work, films from that era are some of my favourites.”
Totally Mild’s new album Her is due out on 23 February 2018.
