Memphis songwriter Julien Baker has announced details of her second album Turn Out The Lights set for release via Matador on October 27th. Watch the affecting video for first single ‘Appointments’ here:
Turn Out The Lights follows Julien’s breakout debut Sprained Ankle, released in 2015 – a bleak yet hopeful, intimate document of tumulus adolescence and grace, reconciling different aspects of her identity (female, queer, Christian), self-recorded by an 18-year-old and her friend in only a few days. Turn Out The Lights retains the spacious and unmediated aesthetic of her debut, while introducing an even rawer emotional edge. The songs are her most anthemic and goosebumps-inducing to date – confessional, unblinking, often dark and haunting, but ultimately transcendent and comforting. The album was written and produced by Julien, and mixed by Craig Silvey (The National, Arcade Fire, Florence & The Machine).
Julien plays a headline UK tour at the beginning of November, dates below. Live she’s truly something to behold, just her and a guitar, channeling the direct, almost devotional quality of the songs with a pin-drop intensity.
