The Great British Bake off is set to return on Channel 4; quite frankly I don’t care about watching people baking lovely cakes and pies only to be judged by a square-jawed Scouser, someone pretending to be your nan, and an extra from an Oliver Twist movie. I’d rather eat cakes, just look at me! Still, who knows whether this ‘telly hit’ will transfer channels successfully or it will fall on its arse harder than Adrian Chiles’s defection to ITV.
Londoners Yassassin meanwhile deliver ‘Cherry Pie’ with sea sawing guitars, off kilter post punk rhythms, decorated with sinister female vocals that lead you up the garden path and pile on top of you yelping in your ears with illusions to sexual obsession. The ghosts of The Slits and Bikini Kill swirl around the attic here but never intrude, this could be the soundtrack to the new series of GBOB as written by Hansel and Gretel creators The Brothers Grimm. Oozing with an alluring, spiky, unsettling yet somehow delightful atmosphere. Yassassin are set to release their debut EP Vitamin Y on September 1st through the help of PRS Foundation will be released on a transparent blue vinyl shortly after. Based on this first taste it’s going to be utterly scrumptious, just don’t have nightmares, kids.
