Prince died in April last year and the reverberations of his loss are still being felt. Such a singular and mysterious performer he embodied a uniquely talented musicality, his best work was dripping in sexuality and individuality, yet crucially an ability to connect with the listener, that will mean that his unmissable sound, his vast and variable body of work and endless artistry will live on. One new artist that clearly has studied the Purple ones back catalogue forensically is Sid Batham.
Returning after three years away Sid Batham delivers with his super new pop single ‘Like I Do’. Possessing a funky snap redolent of early Prince and the infectiousness of New Jack Swing and Bobby Brown‘s ‘My Prerogative’ . But this is more than just a tribute to slick RnB tinged pop, but an expertly crafted slice of soul pop imbued with Nathan’s sweet vocal pop that embodies a confidence that pleads for a second chance with a glint in the eye over a funky bass, catchy gleaming guitar flicks and a dance-floor beat. It will put a pep in your step and remind you of better times as you navigate August’s sunshine and showers.
Recorded between his bedroom and the legendary RAK Studios in London with producer Rob Brinkman, ‘Like I Do’ follows ‘Called For’ which both feature on Sid’s forthcoming EP offering a teasing glimpse of what’s to come from an artist looking to forge his own path from his influences, embodying his sound with just enough individuality, energy and personality to make it not just another 80s pop homage, plus its possessed of an ability to leap out of your speakers and into your head.
Following his full band set at The Alternative Escape 2017, Sid will be playing his first headline show since 2014 on 9th August at the Sebright Arms. Free tickets are available via Dice.
