Angelo De Augustine signed to Sufjan Steven’s Asthmatic Kitty label for his second album Swim Inside The Moon, which will be released in Europe on the 18th of August this year (a week later in America).
Writing and recording his music at home in Thousand Oaks, California, Angelo De Augustine’s setup for Swim Inside The Moon was very elementary: he would place a Shure SM57 microphone next to the wall of his shower and then feed a cable back to an analogue reel-to-reel tape recorder in his nearby bedroom. He would proceed to hit the record button and then run quickly into the bathroom with his guitar and sit on the edge of the tub and play and sing. On some of the songs, De Augustine played his mother’s 100-year-old piano in the living room, and on others, he added synth and electric guitar. He kept it all very simple.
And the song ‘Haze’, taken from the forthcoming album, reflects that simplicity. With such sparse instrumentation and his distinctly delicate voice Angelo De Augustine does conjure up certain thoughts of his new record label boss, but the sheer graceful fragility of the song and its fundamental rustic texture moves him far beyond any point of mere comparison. ‘Haze’ is most surely a thing of great uncomplicated beauty.
