Following the release of his 10th album, Metromonk, Manu Delago shares upcoming single Mesmer Mesmerising, which features guest vocals from Isa Kurz. Filmed on a deserted beach in south east Australia, the video continues a theme in the visual output from Delago, following his previous single-take video for Freeze, a live performance on a mountaintop. Here, we can witness a perpetually spinning camera as it captures the bleak beauty of a seemingly deserted beach. This emptiness is subsequently punctuated by the appearance of people, as they act out the imagery of the lyrics.
The song, a reference to Franz Anton Mesmer, a controversial 18th Century hypnotist and physician, also provided the inspiration for the video. Commenting on Mesmer’s continued influence, Delago explains; “Mesmer used various techniques to heal and hypnotise people in the 18th century, including an instrument called a glass harmonica which constantly spins while being played. So the idea of the instrument and also hypnosis led us to a spinning camera for this video.”
