Oh, memories of summer days past, when the days seemed to stretch before us endlessly, the smell of freshly cut grass, the sun’s rays beating down, so hot you could fry an egg on a parked car! Then there’s the first flush of teenage love with all of the conflicted feelings it throws up: the flutter in the stomach, the fleeting joy, longing and somewhat inevitable heartbreak.
With the gorgeous guitar pop of ‘Lucky Girl’ young New Zealander Amelia Murray aka Fazerdaze, crafts a delectable sound that elicits these memories and feelings of yore. Skittery surf guitars shimmer in the middle distance like the heat that rises up from the pavement on a scorching day, pared-back percussion clips, while Murray’s delicate echoing vocal tone, half effortless melodic hook, half yearning lullaby dipped in golden woozy reverb.
It’s direct yet deceptively intricate sound laced catchy melodies was recorded and produced by Murray in her bedroom are the soundtrack the growing pains of a young girl trying to leave behind the ghosts of her previous life behind her as she tries to find her way in the world. It’s the sumptuous bittersweet sounds of summer. The video fits the mood featuring Murray as she clambers through fields, beaches and swirling seas of her hometown laced with illustrative stop motion shots, framed by a purple backdrop of hazy skylines on sun-kissed days; watch it above.
Having independently put out the single ‘Little Uneasy’ as well as a self-titled EP last year, Fazerdaze has played with Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Connan Mockasin and was invited to join the Red Bull Music Academy in Montreal in 2016. Murray recently released the gorgeous Morningside, her first full-length record on the Flying Nun label.
