Nadine Shah is back. It may well now be a couple of years since her second album Fast Food was released, but on the firm evidence of Out The Way the South Tyneside singer-songwriter has not just been idly sat around doing nothing in the interim period.
The lead single from her forthcoming album Holiday Destination – due out on 25th August on 1965 Records – Out The Way is a brutal, uncompromising tilt at the potent rise of rabid populism and nationalism that is currently sweeping across the globe and carving out huge divisions within our borders.
Growing up in Whitburn to Pakistani and Norwegian parents, Nadine Shah is probably better placed than most to comment about the troubled search for personal identity that can exist in a world increasingly riven by hatred and turmoil. Her disturbing message is conveyed over a rattling tattoo of drums and guitar as the song’s momentum builds up to a frantic climax punctuated by Pete Wareham’s wailing saxophone.
