It’s now been two years since Meursault released their last mini-album, The Organ Grinder’s Monkey, and a whole four since their 2012 Scottish Album of the Year nominated full-length Something for the Weakened. Though the main protagonist, Neil Pennycock, has been involved in numerous projects in the meantime (including recording and producing for Plastic Animals), we’ve heard nothing from Meursault since.
Finally, the wait is nearly over. Meursault’s new EP Simple Is Good is out on 28th November via Song, By Toad. It’s leading up to a new album, set to come out in February.
Speaking about his return to Meursault, Neil Pennycook said: “For various reasons I had to step away from Meursault for a while and take stock. Over the course of touring and promoting ‘Something for the Weakened’ I’d made the decision to turn Meursault into a ‘band’ and this proved to be a bad move as it turned the project into something which (to me) was unrecognisable and increasingly unmanageable. I started playing solo as Supermoon, and after a while I began to realise that the music I was writing had a great deal in common with earlier Meursault. I decided that the best course of action was to ‘hit reset’ and pick up where I’d left off, with Meursault as a solo project and a revolving backing band.”
Meursault have also released a brand new video for the EP’s title track, directed by Matthew Swan. In keeping with the spirit of the track’s title, it’s a simple clip that depicts them performing. Watch below.
