Dublin’s So Cow is a power punk pop act led by songwriter Brian Kelly from Dublin, Ireland. We have the premiere of the track ‘Captain of Industry’ listen to it below; it’s from their album Lisa Marie Airplane Tour which is out now on Jigsaw. A ramshackle slacker pop delight that jangles across the fuzz box sound of Husker Du, the melodies of the Buzzcocks and the dark wit and angularity of Pavement.
Here’s what Brian says about the track:
“Captain of Industry was written on a ukelele. Let me go check the spelling of that… No, it’s ukulele. Fair enough. This is probably the first song written of this batch. It contains a few references that make a bit of sense overall. The first word is ‘Abba’. I drive a shit-heap of a car with a tape deck in it, and I bought a bunch of tapes at a car boot sale. Pet Sounds, some Madness album, a Specials compilation and an Abba Hits album.
It was called The Hits: 3. It had some singles on it I hadn’t heard before, and whatever other songs. Maybe they were singles in Scandinavia or something. The song ‘Head Over Heels’ is on it, which despite my initial
disgust is now maybe my favourite song of theirs.
Anyway, the idea of them in 1982, slogging their way through early hits while not getting on at all. It stuck in my head. Being too far gone, I guess. There’s a tie-in with Irish town planning that makes sense in my head, but maybe not yours. Oh, and there’s a bit that goes ‘C D E F G H I Know’, which I realised after the fact is pretty much a lift from what Chris Knox does in ‘Nothing’s Going To Happen’.”
