Tel Aviv’s ZOHARA is a trained Jazz musician, though you would never have guessed that going by ‘Play’ alone – at least not until the last few moments, anyway. It’s unpredictable, the vocals are almost sickly-sweet, and it’s super fun. It’s quite possibly an unintended lazy comparison, but it brings to mind Bjork, but without the super-quirky creative flair we’ve come to know and love about Bjork. ‘Play’ is still really creative, but nobody but Bjork can out-Bjork Bjork. I know because I’ve seen it.
I don’t want to call it Jazz-Pop, but it isn’t your ‘regular’ pop music either. ‘Play’ is fun, lightfooted and, dare I say it, playful. It gets better the more you listen to it, too. The track – and ZOHARA herself – is a breath of fresh air amongst a sea of samey bands and pop around right now.
‘Play’ is taken from her debut album, due before the end of the year. The single was released 16th September in digital format only. iTunes
